The mitochondria, also known as the "powerhouse" of the cell are crucial for energy production. The length of these organelles ranges from 0.5 micrometers to 10 millimeters. Some organelles are smaller, like ribosomes. The diameter of ribosomes (the sites of protein synthesis) ranges from 20 to 30 micrometers. In this context, the ribosomes are one of the most functional human cell components.

We reach molecules when we look deeper at the structure of the life. When two or more atoms combine, they form compounds that are essential to biological processes. All human cells contain macromolecules such as proteins, lipids and carbohydrates.The DNA molecule stands out as one of the most notable. The DNA molecule is composed of nucleotide unit and can be stretched to several centimeters, but it's only 2 nanometers thick. DNA is one of the smallest components in the body. It's also essential.Atoms are the fundamental units of matter. The atomic radius for hydrogen, the simplest of all atoms, is 53 picometers (a picometer is a trillionth of meter). Hydrogen is the lightest and smallest element. However, it has a significant role in the body, since it is an important component of organic molecules and water.We find subatomic particles, such as protons, electrons and neutrons. These particles are the building block of atoms. The electrons have the smallest mass compared to protons or neutrons. In the standard particle physics model, electrons are regarded as point particles that have no defined size. They exist, however, within the probabilities of an orbital.The smallest human structures play an important role in the overall function of our body. DNA, for example, carries genetic data, while proteins serve a wide range of functions, ranging from catalyzing reactions in biochemistry as enzymes, to providing structural support within cells. The interaction of molecules on a microscopic scale contributes to larger systems which sustain life. These include metabolism, cell signaling and immune responses.
