The human skeleton plays a number of vital roles within the body. The skeleton is composed of 206 bones for adults, but this number may vary depending on age and individual differences. The axial skeleton is made up of the vertebral column, rib cage and skull. The skull protects and houses the brain. The vertebral columns safeguards the spine and supports the head and trunk. The rib cage protects and provides a breathing mechanism by encasing the heart and lungs.2. The appendicular skull is composed of the bones that make up the limbs, girdles and the hands. It allows for movement and interaction with our environment. The shoulder girdle is made up of clavicles, scapulae, upper limbs such as humerus and radius, the phalanges and metacarpals and the hip bones.The skeleton has multiple functions.

1. **Support** The skeleton is a structural support to the body. It allows us to maintain posture and shape. It serves as a scaffolding for organs, muscles, and tissues.
2. Bones protect vital organs. The brain is protected by the skull, the ribs and lungs are shielded by the ribcage, and vertebrae protect the spinal cord. The protective role of the vertebrae is vital for protecting the delicate systems in the body.
3. **Movement** Bones act as levers and work in conjunction with muscles to allow movement. When muscles contract they pull on the bones. This allows for many different motions from walking to running, grasping, and lifting.
4. **Mineral Storage** Bones are a storehouse for minerals. Especially calcium and phosphorus. These stores can be accessed by the body for different physiological processes such as nerve transmission, muscle contraction and blood clotting.
5. **Blood cell production** The bone marrow in certain bones is responsible for the production of blood cells. The red bone marrow is responsible for producing white blood cells and platelets. These are necessary to carry oxygen, fight infections and clot blood

#Bone Composition#
The bones are made up of a mixture of organic and non-organic materials. About 30% of the bone mass is made up of organic materials, mostly collagen. Collagen provides flexibility and strength. The remaining 70% of bone mass is made up of inorganic minerals, mostly hydroxyapatite. This mineral gives bones their rigidity.
Bones are classified based on the shape of their bones.
1. The femur, for example, is longer than it is wide. They are primarily used as levers to move.
2. **Short bones**: These cube-shaped bones, like those found in the wrist and ankle, provide support and stability with limited movement.
3. Flat bones: These are bones that are flat and thin, like the skull or ribs. These bones are often used for protection and as sites of muscle attachment.
4. **Irregular bones**: Bones which do not fall into any of the other categories (such as some facial and vertebral bones) have complex shapes to suit their functions.
Bone health is essential to overall wellbeing. Diet, exercise and lifestyle choices all play a significant role in bone strength and density. Calcium and vitamin D, which are nutrients that aid in the formation and maintenance of bones, are vital for bone health. Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking and strength training can help to stimulate bone density and growth.As we age, our bone density may decrease.
