Bones, which are part of the skeletal structure in both humans and animals, are very complex organs. They also facilitate movement and serve as a mineral reservoir. Bones are designed to perform these functions and vary in design depending on where they are located and what their role is. Understanding the structural characteristics of bone at the microscopic level and the macroroscopic level is crucial to understanding how bones function in the body.
Bones can be divided into different structural regions at the macro level. These regions are important in the mechanical properties, such as strength, flexibility and their ability support body weight. *Cortical Bone (Compact Bone)** The outermost layer of compact bone provides protection and strength.Each osteon is composed of layers of mineralized tissue surrounding a central canal containing blood vessels and nerves. #Spongy bone cancellous bone#
The cancellous or spongy bone is found mostly at the ends of the long bones, and also inside the vertebrae. Trabeculae are a network made up of tiny bone struts that are arranged irregularly. These trabeculae align along stress lines, providing strength and cushioning weight. ##### A. **Diaphysis & Epiphysis**The diaphysis, which is primarily composed of compact bone, supports the weight of the body. They are responsible for joint movement and interactions with other bones.
**Medullary Cavity** The central hollow cavity of the diaphysis is called the medullary cavity. The cavity is filled with bone, which is essential for the production and maintenance of blood cells. In infants and young children, however, it can contain red bone-marrow which produces both red and white blood cell. **Microscopic features of bone structure** The extracellular matrix is what makes up bone tissue at the microscopic scale. Osteocytes, osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the three primary cell types of bone. Each has distinct roles for bone formation, remodeling and maintenance. #Osteoblasts&Osteocytes#
Osteoblasts, or bone-forming cells, synthesize and release components of the matrix, such as collagen fibers, and the mineral substance hydroxyapatite. They are essential in the growth, repair and remodeling of bone tissue. The osteoblasts can be found on the surface of the bone and are embedded in the matrix that they produce. They eventually differentiate into osteocytes.Dendrites, which are long and thin extensions that run through canaliculi (tiny channels), are what they have. Osteocytes help maintain bone tissue by responding to mechanical stresses and signaling changes in bone structure.
This ensures that bones don't become too thick or fragile. The matrix of the bone is composed of both organic and inorganic elements. The collagen fibers that make up the organic part of the matrix are what give bone its strength.
