## 🌍 Christopher Columbus: A Detailed Biography##

Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, a powerful maritime republic located in what is now Italy. His father, Domenico Colombo, worked as a wool weaver, and his mother, Susanna Fontanarossa, came from a humble background. From a young age, Columbus was drawn to the sea—perhaps influenced by Genoa's strong naval culture. Although he received only limited formal education, he nevertheless developed skills in navigation, geography, and map-making (cartography). In his teens, Columbus began working on merchant ships and gradually gained experience sailing across the Mediterranean Sea. His voyages exposed him to diverse cultures and ideas—particularly the concept that Asia could be reached by sailing westward across the Atlantic Ocean—a theory that was not widely accepted at the time.During the 15th century, European merchants were eager to find a direct sea route to Asia in order to access spices, silk, and other valuable commodities. Traditional overland routes were long and perilous. Columbus believed that sailing westward would provide a shorter path to reach Asia. However, he significantly underestimated the size of the Earth and the actual distance between Europe and Asia.

Columbus sought financial backing for his ambitious plan. He approached several European monarchs—including those of Portugal and England—but was repeatedly turned down. Finally, in 1492, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile (Spain) agreed to sponsor his expedition. ### The First Voyage (1492).In August 1492, Columbus set sail from Spain with three ships: the *NiΓ±a*, the *Pinta*, and the *Santa MarΓa*. After weeks of uncertainty and fear among his crew members, land finally came into view on October 12, 1492. Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador.Believing that they had reached the outer edges of Asia, Columbus referred to the indigenous people he encountered there as "Indians." He explored parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba and Hispaniola. However, he never realized that he had reached a continent that was previously unknown to Europeans. ### Later Voyages and Discoveries.Columbus undertook three more voyages between 1493 and 1504. During these expeditions, he further explored the Caribbean islands and the northern coast of South America. His expeditions opened the door to European exploration and colonization in the Americas.

Despite his achievements, Columbus faced numerous challenges. His governance of the colonies was criticized for being harsh and ineffective. Reports of mistreatment of indigenous people and poor administration led to his arrest in 1500. Although he was later released, his reputation suffered lasting damage.Christopher Columbus is often credited with "discovering" the Americas, even though indigenous peoples had been living there for thousands of years, and earlier explorers—such as the Norse, including Leif Erikson—had already reached North America centuries earlier. Columbus's voyages initiated sustained contact between Europe and the Americas—a process known as the Columbian Exchange. As a result, an exchange of goods, culture, animals, and diseases took place between the two worlds. While on one hand this brought economic growth and new opportunities to Europe, on the other, it inflicted immense suffering upon the indigenous populations through disease, slavery, and colonization.Columbus married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, the daughter of a Portuguese man.
