The Digestive System Process Food
The digestive system processes food in several steps to break it down into nutrients that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair. Here's how it works: **Mastication (chewing):** This process begins when you take a bite of food. The teeth break the food into smaller pieces, while saliva produced by the salivary glands contains enzymes such as amylase that begin to break down carbohydrates. **Swallowing:** The food is then swallowed, and it moves into the throat (pharynx) and down the esophagus. **Movement through the esophagus** **Peristalsis:** This is a wave-like movement of muscles in the esophagus that pushes food toward the stomach. Food moves down in a matter of seconds to minutes. **Stomach (Gastric Digestion)****Mechanical Digestion:** The stomach contains muscles that churn the food and mix it with digestive juices. This helps break down the food into a semi-liquid substance called *chyme*.
#Small Intestine (Absorption of Nutrients)#
**Duodenum:** The chyme moves into the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum, where bile (from the liver) and pancreatic juices (from the pancreas) break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.**Jejunum and Ileum:** In the next sections of the small intestine, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through villi (tiny finger-like structures lining the intestinal walls). Nutrients such as amino acids, glucose, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are absorbed here.**Chemical Digestion:** Gastric juices, which contain hydrochloric acid and enzymes like pepsin, begin to break down proteins. The acidic environment also helps kill harmful bacteria.
**Large intestine (water and mineral absorption)**
The remaining waste matter moves into the large intestine (colon), where water, salts and some vitamins are absorbed. The remaining matter is now in a more solid form and is deposited in the rectum. **Excretion (anus)**Finally, undigested food and waste products are expelled from the body as feces through the anus.During the digestive process, various organs and enzymes work together to break down food into simpler molecules that the body can absorb and use for energy, tissue repair and other essential functions.
